Compare two numbers and write the matching sign between them.
Picture the numbers as towers of building blocks:
The taller tower belongs to the bigger number.
> means: greater than. The left tower is taller (5 > 3).
< means: less than. The left tower is shorter (3 < 5).
= means: equal to. Both towers are the same height (4 = 4).
Remember: the open, wide end of the sign always points to the bigger number, the pointed corner points to the smaller number.
The filled in signs show the answer.

What does this exercise practice?
This exercise trains the estimating of quantities and the ability to order numbers by their size, a foundation for later calculating strategies.
Common pitfalls
The less-than sign and the greater-than sign are often mixed up. A memory trick: the sign always opens toward the bigger number, like a mouth that wants to eat more.
How to practice at home
Roll two numbers and ask: which number is bigger? Draw the sign in the air with your finger. This makes the direction of the sign tangible.
