Subtracting Pictures

You see two groups of pictures. Cross out from the first group as many as you can see in the second group.
Count how many pictures are left.
The filled-in example below shows the minus task.

Example

๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽโˆ’๐ŸŽ=2
๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“โˆ’๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“=3

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

The task makes the minus sign clear: taking away means an amount becomes smaller.

Common pitfalls

Children often count all the pictures instead of just the ones left. Important: the crossed-out pictures no longer belong to it.

How to practice at home

Lay out five gummy bears, eat two of them and ask how many are left. That makes taking away easy to experience.
