With plus you put the groups together. With three groups you calculate step by step: first the two on the left, then add the third.
With minus you cross out as many pictures in the first group as you can see in the second group, then count what is left.

What does this exercise practice?
The tasks introduce the plus and minus signs through clear pictures. The child turns a drawn amount into a calculation, with two groups, with three groups and when taking away.
Common pitfalls
Two mistakes are common: with plus, only the bigger group gets written down instead of adding both. With minus, all pictures get counted even though the crossed-out ones no longer belong.
How to practice at home
Make two or three little piles with toy figures, count them together and say the problem out loud. For minus, lay out five gummy bears, eat two of them and ask how many are left.
