Doubling and tripling

In these tasks the same number appears several times in one problem. You simply add it up.
Doubling means: add the number plus itself.
Tripling means: add the number together three times.
The filled in number shows the answer.

Examples

Example: Doubling

4+4=8

Example: Tripling

4+4+4=12

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Doubling and tripling train adding equal addends and lay the foundation for the times tables with the 2 and the 3.

Common pitfalls

Children sometimes forget that doubling is exactly the same as 'plus itself'. Writing the same number down twice helps. When tripling, one addend often gets lost; calculating in steps helps: first 4 + 4, then + 4.

How to practice at home

When setting the table: if each person gets two forks, how many forks is that altogether? And if three children each get 3 candies, how many is that together? This way doubling and tripling become very concrete.
