Each animal gets its own number: with four animals that is 1, 2, 3 or 4. Draw the places as dashes on a sheet.
Start with the safest clue - "right at the front" or "right at the back" fixes a place immediately.
Clues like "directly ahead of" tell you two places at once, and they must be next to each other.

Common pitfalls
"Ahead of" and "directly ahead of" are easily mixed up. "Ahead of" means somewhere in front, "directly ahead" means immediately in front, with nobody in between.
