Rocket Cargo

A rocket cannot take everything. It carries at most as many kilograms as the chip with the rocket says.
Five to seven parts are lying on the ground. Every tile tells you how heavy that part is.
Check off the parts that should fly along and write down on the right how heavy your load is altogether.
You are looking for the heaviest load that still fits. Do not simply take the heaviest parts first - often nothing else fits afterwards, and another load would have been heavier.

What does this exercise practice?

Rocket cargo trains two things at once. First, adding up several weights within one hundred, always with the unit kg. Second, comparing. A load is only the best one if no other load is heavier, so the child has to put several options side by side instead of stopping at the first one that fits. That is exactly the difference between "a solution" and "the best solution".

Common pitfalls

The most common mistake is the greedy choice - the heaviest part first, then the next heaviest. With a capacity of 34 kg and parts of 6, 9, 10, 14 and 16 kg that gives 16 + 14 = 30 kg and nothing else fits. But 9 + 10 + 14 makes 33 kg. Whoever has found one load should always try a second one.

How to practice at home

Pack a bag together that may hold at most five kilograms. Weigh a few things on the kitchen scale, write the weights on a note and look for the heaviest filling that is still allowed. Who can find one that gets closer to five kilograms?
