Every number can be split into two parts.
With big numbers, place value helps you.
Example: 548 = 500 + 48
548 is split into the hundreds (500) and the rest (48).
Sometimes the front part is missing, sometimes the back part, find the numbers!

Common pitfalls
Children often forget a place value in the rest: 548 is 500 + 48, not 500 + 4 or 500 + 8. Both parts together must add up to the whole number again.
