In the place value chart every digit of a number gets its own column.
The hundreds go on the left, the tens in the middle, the ones on the right.
Example: 349 has 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 9 ones.
So in the chart H=3, T=4 and O=9.
It also works the other way round, you build the number from the place values!
The numbers filled in show the solution.
Example
| H | Z | E |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 4 | 9 |
| H | Z | E |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 0 | 6 |
For parents
What does this exercise practice?
Determining the place value of every digit up to 1000 safely and putting a number together from hundreds, tens and ones.
Common pitfalls
A 0 in the middle often gets left out. 503 has 5 hundreds, 0 tens and 3 ones. Without the 0 it would read 53, a completely different number.
How to practice at home
Look at house numbers, page numbers or prices and name together how many hundreds, tens and ones they contain.
