Mental Division with Jottings

With mental division jottings, you split the first number into two parts that can both be divided by the divisor.
The first part is a round multiple of ten, the rest is what is left over. Then you divide both parts separately and add the results.

Example: 128 : 4 split up
128 : 4 = 120 : 4 + 8 : 4
= 30 + 2
= 32

The numbers filled in show the solution.

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

This exercise shows a method for divisions beyond the times tables, before written division is introduced in Grade 4.

Common pitfalls

Children sometimes split into parts that cannot be divided by the divisor. It helps to look for the largest round multiple of ten that still fits.

How to practice at home

Split out loud when sharing things at home, for example 156 stickers among 6 children as 120 and 36.
