Calculating With Blocks

You see two rows of blocks.
Between them is an operation sign.

This is how you do it:
1. Count the blocks in the top row.
2. Count the blocks in the bottom row.
3. Add the two numbers together or subtract them.

The numbers written in show the answer.

Example

+6 + 5 = 11
8 3 = 5
+8 + 6 = 14

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Read quantities from pictures and use them to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Common pitfalls

Children often miscount long rows. Grouping in steps of five and then continuing to count helps.

How to practice at home

Build two towers with building blocks, count the blocks and work out how many there are together.
