Example: 43 : 6
6 fits 7 times into 43 (6 · 7 = 42).
1 is left over, that is the remainder.
43 : 6 = 7 remainder 1

What does this exercise practice?
This exercise builds on understanding division: children learn that dividing still makes sense even when it does not come out even, and they name the remainder.
Common pitfalls
Children often pick a number that is too large and don't notice that the product then becomes bigger than the starting number. Help them recite the multiples and stop at the last value below the number.
