The tables of 1, 2, 5 and 10 are the core tasks.
With them you can work out hard times tasks easily too.
Example: 7 × 6 is hard, but:
5 × 6 = 30 (core), 2 × 6 = 12
Together: 30 + 12 = 42, so 7 × 6 = 42
Tip: split the hard number into a core number plus the rest.
The numbers written in show the answer.
Example
5 · 6 = 30
2 · 6 = 12
7 · 6 = 42
For parents
What does this exercise practice?
Core tasks help to derive hard times table facts from easy core rows, with bigger factors too.
Common pitfalls
Some children try to memorize everything, which is a lot more work. Splitting the number is the faster way.
How to practice at home
Try: 6 × 12 = 5 × 12 + 1 × 12 = 60 + 12 = 72.
