Magic picture

In a grid the squares have names, letters on top and numbers on the left.
You find a square by putting column and row together, for example B1.

Example: Color in the squares B1, C1 and D1.
That is how a horizontal line appears at the top, the start of a figure.
Color in all the named squares, then the magic picture appears (here a 5).
The numbers written in show the answer.

Example

ABCDE12345

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Confidently find fields via column and row and reveal a pattern.

Common pitfalls

Column and row are easily mixed up. Say it out loud: first the letter (column), then the number (row).

How to practice at home

Play battleship or read out fields like C4 on a city map, this practices exactly the same kind of search.
