With a rectangle you can work out two things.
The perimeter is the way once around along all the sides.
The area says how many squares fit into the rectangle.
This is how you do it:
1. Perimeter: add length and width twice, for example 6 + 2 + 6 + 2 = 16.
2. Area: calculate length times width, for example 6 times 2 = 12.
3. The perimeter is measured in cm, the area in square centimeters.

Common pitfalls
Children often mix up perimeter and area. The perimeter is the edge all around (adding), the area is the space inside (multiplying).
