For semi-written multiplying you split the first number into tens and ones.
Then you multiply both parts separately and add the part results.
Example: 34 · 6 split up
34 · 6 = 30 · 6 + 4 · 6
= 180 + 24
= 204
The numbers written in show the answer.
Example
34 · 6 =
= 30 · 6 + 4 · 6
= 180 + 24
= 204
23 · 8 =
= 20 · 8 + 3 · 8
= 160 + 24
= 184
For parents
What does this exercise practice?
This exercise strengthens place-value understanding and shows a flexible calculation method before written multiplication is introduced.
Common pitfalls
Children sometimes only multiply the ones and forget the tens. It helps to write down both partial products before adding.
How to practice at home
Split small times tasks from everyday life, for example 4 packs with 26 pens each.
