The short hand shows the hour, the long hand the minutes.
This is how you do it:
1. First look at the short hand and find the hour.
2. Then look at the long hand: every big mark stands for 5 minutes.
3. Example: short hand just after the 8, long hand on the 4, so 8:20.
In the examples below the time written in shows the answer.

What does this exercise practice?
Confidently read times on an analog clock, from full hours to 5-minute steps.
Common pitfalls
Children like to mix up the hands or read the digit instead of the minutes on the long hand, so 4 instead of 20 minutes. Practice counting on in fives out loud.
How to practice at home
Look at the clock together several times a day and have your child say the time, for example before meals and before bedtime.
