Which Scale Fits?

There are weights on the left and right of the scales.
You decide whether the scales are balanced or whether one side is heavier.

This is how you do it:
1. Add up the weight on the left side.
2. Add up the weight on the right side.
3. Join the row to the scales that match it.

In the examples below the line drawn in shows the answer.

Example

1 kg500 g + 500 g
Balanced
2 kg500 g
left heavier
500 g1 kg
right heavier

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Add and compare weights and understand the balance scale as a model for smaller, greater and equal.

Common pitfalls

When comparing, children often forget to convert, for example that 1 kg equals 1000 g. Convert both sides to grams first, then compare.

How to practice at home

Build a coat-hanger scale and hang small objects in bags until both sides hang at the same level.
