Word problems

In a word problem the sum is hidden in a little story.

This is how you do it:
1. Read the task carefully. What is given, what is asked for?
2. Think about whether you have to add, subtract, multiply or divide.
3. Calculate and write a sentence with the answer.

Tip: underline the important numbers in the story.
In the examples below the numbers written in show the answer.

Example

There are 1250 nails in a box. The craftsman has 4 full boxes. How many nails is that altogether? 5000

3200 sweets are shared equally into 8 bags. How many sweets are in each bag? 400

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Work out the right calculation from a text and interpret the result in context.

Common pitfalls

Some children just calculate with all the numbers in the text. First ask what is actually being asked!

How to practice at home

Make up small math stories while shopping and let your child find the calculation for them.
