You divide big numbers step by step underneath each other. That is called written division in long form.
This is how you do it:
1. Look at the first place of the dividend. How often does the divisor fit in? You write that digit in the quotient.
2. Multiply the digit by the divisor and subtract the result below.
3. Bring down the next digit and divide again.
4. Carry on like that until all digits are brought down. If something is left at the end, that is the remainder.
Example: 8456 : 4 = 2114. First 8 : 4 = 2, then bring down the 4, 4 : 4 = 1, then the 5, then the 6. In the end there is no remainder.
In the box below you see the whole calculation. The number written in shows the answer.

What does this exercise practice?
Dividing four- and five-digit numbers by a single-digit divisor in written long form, with a remainder too.
Common pitfalls
Some children forget to bring down the next digit, or do not write the digits place under place. Watch out for neat columns and make sure every digit of the dividend gets its turn.
How to practice at home
Divide a small number together, for example 84 divided by 6, and say every step out loud.
