Where Does the Crown Go?

A kingdom is made of areas. Every area scores fields times crowns. An area without a crown scores nothing - even if it is huge.
The symbols show the terrain - tree = forest, waves = lake, blades = meadow, furrows = field, peaks = mountain. The thick lines separate the areas.
In every area one building plot is free (the pale square). You still have one field with a crown. It goes on exactly one plot.
Work out what each area would score afterwards. Draw the crown into the best plot and write the new total into the box.

What does this exercise practice?

Here multiplying is not an operator sign but a picture: area times factor. The child sees that 6 · 0 = 0 - a huge area without a crown stays worthless - and that a small area with three crowns can beat a big one. That is exactly why the biggest area is never automatically the right choice.

Common pitfalls

The new field brings both - a field and a crown. So an area with 4 fields and 3 crowns then scores 5 · 4, not 4 · 4. Counting only the crown gives too small a result.

How to practice at home

Build two areas out of blocks on the table: one of 6 blocks with one coin on it, one of 2 blocks with three coins. Which scores more? And how does that change when one block with a coin is added?
