Two offers stand side by side and you may pick one. But which one is more? You only see that once you have worked out both.
Every card shows two numbers. The first says how many packs there are, the second how much is inside each pack. The pictures next to them tell you what it is about.
So 3 📦 × 4 ⭐ means 3 packs with 4 stickers each. That makes 3 · 4 = 12 stickers.
Work out both cards, write the numbers into the boxes and check off the one that gives you more.
Example
For parents
What does this exercise practice?
Here multiplying is not an end in itself but the tool for a decision: without both products you cannot choose at all. Along the way the child learns the most important insight about products - more packs does not mean more inside. 2 · 7 = 14 beats 4 · 3 = 12, even though it is only half as many packs.
Common pitfalls
The most common mistake is to look only at the first number and take the offer with the most packs. In this chapter sometimes one wins, sometimes the other - that is exactly why you really have to calculate. And when both numbers are close together, guessing no longer helps.
How to practice at home
While shopping, put two packs side by side: 3 cups of 4 each or 2 cups of 6? Who works out faster which one is more? The same works with blocks, cards or bags of sweets.
