The secret code is made of three different shapes - circle, triangle, square or diamond.
Two tries are already there. Behind each you see how many shapes are exactly right (right shape, right place) and how many are only misplaced (right shape, wrong place).
Write the code into the three fields below. Start with the try that reveals the most - "0 exact, 3 misplaced" tells you all three shapes at once.

What does this exercise practice?
This is the only place in the book where feedback about an answer is the task, not the answer itself. The child reasons from two pieces of information to a third and learns that a piece of information can be worth more than a hit.
Common pitfalls
"Exact" and "misplaced" are often added together. They are two separate counts, though - a shape that sits exactly right is not counted as misplaced as well.
How to practice at home
Play it with four differently colored bricks - one person lays three of them face down in a row, the other guesses and is told the two numbers after each try.
