Neighboring Numbers

Every number has a number before (one less) and a number after (one more).

Example: The neighbors of 245,080 are 245,079 and 245,081.
245,079 ← 245,080 → 245,081

That works with very big numbers too, watch the place boundaries!
The numbers written in show the answer.

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

This exercise strengthens understanding of the number order up to 1,000,000 and secures counting on across ten, hundred and thousand boundaries.

Common pitfalls

Children often stumble at the thousand and ten thousand boundaries. The number before 500,000 is 499,999, the number after 999,999 is 1,000,000. Point these transitions out especially.

How to practice at home

Name a big number, for example a population or a distance, and let the child name the neighbors. Numbers like 999,999 are especially exciting.
