Tally chart

With a tally chart you count how often something occurs.
You make one mark for each thing.

Tip: always bundle five marks together (four upright, one across).
That way it is easier to count at the end.

Example: 12 marks are two bundles of five and two single marks.
You calculate: 5 + 5 + 2 = 12.
The numbers written in show the answer.

For parents

What does this exercise practice?

Collect data, count in bundles of five and compare quantities.

Common pitfalls

Forgetting single marks while counting. First count the full bundles of five in steps of five, then add the single marks.

How to practice at home

For a week, use tally marks to count how often you were outside or which car colors drive past your street.
