When rounding you look at the place to the right of the rounding place.
If it is 5 or bigger, you round up. If it is smaller than 5, you round down.
To thousands: 234,617 ≈ 235,000 (the hundreds are 6, so round up).
To ten thousands: 547,236 ≈ 550,000 (the thousands are 7, so round up).
To hundred thousands: 234,617 ≈ 200,000 (the ten thousands are 3, so round down).

Children often look at the wrong place. Only the one digit to the right of the rounding place decides, all digits after it become zeros.
